Maryland and Virginia Native Plants: Gardening & Fun

Today’s Nuts for Natives features a somewhat random assortment of gardening happenings and projects and hopefully something fun for you.

Native plant gardening expert Barbara Ellis Speaks this Saturday (March 7th) in Central Maryland
Barbara Ellis literally wrote the book about gardening in the Chesapeake. She is speaking in Severna Park Saturday at a Unity Gardens event. Unity Gardens enthusiastically promotes native plant projects across Anne Arundel County, Maryland.  Proceeds from ticket sales support their efforts and you can buy tickets here.

A Pallet Path
A path made from used pallets.  You may know about Garden Answer, a You Tube channel about gardening by the talented Laura LeBoutillier.  She grew up working in her parents nursery, is reportedly a classically trained pianist, and her channel features her amazing garden in eastern Oregon. She has an incredible array of gardening DIY projects including this one:

A Green Roof for your Birdhouse
Want a craft project to spruce up an old bird house? Adding a green roof to your birdhouse is pretty easy.  Sedum ternatum, the only sedum native to the Chesapeake is a tough, versatile low growing plant that will work perfectly on top of a bird house, as a ground cover, or in the old bird bath below.

Native Plant Nurseries reopening this Month
Nature by Design in Alexandria and Herring Run Nursery in Baltimore open back up for business this month. Nature by Design opened this week. As with most nurseries, plants are just arriving so please call ahead if you are in search of something specific. Nature by Design has a number of quart sized perennials.  Herring Run Nursery opens next week on March 11th. As always, please check hours as they vary during different times of the year.
