On Saturday morning, September 28th, 2024, twelve native nurseries from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania will come together in Northern Alexandria to sell plants. This event offers a valuable opportunity not just to purchase plants, but also to benefit from the vast expertise of the participating growers.
Volunteer Scott Knudsen and his wife Jennifer Pease, along with numerous community volunteers, started the sale. Over the course of twenty years, the event has grown to become the largest gathering of its kind in the DC area.
Among the participating nurseries at the event are beloved local nurseries like Nature by Design, Chesapeake Natives, and Bona Terra, as well as nurseries from farther afield such as Wood Thrush Natives and Morningside Farm and Nursery. Pennsylvania's holly specialist, Heartwood Nursery, will also be there.
Go Native Tree Farm, Goodman LLC Native Plants, Hill House Farm and Nursery, Meadowsweet Nursery, Native Plant Company, Seven Bends Nursery and Yellow House Natives are also expected!
The sale opens at 9AM and closes at 2PM. The sale is held at the Church of St. Clement at 1701 N. Quaker Lane.
Fall is the ideal time to plant. Cooler weather is more favorable for new plantings yet the soil is still warm to enable those root systems to get well established before winter. The weather forecast looks good but then again, isn't any weather suitable when a native plant sale is involved?!
Happy Gardening.
Oh, have fun at the plant sale! It looks like lots of great options to select. Have a great weekend!
